The Luck Uglies by Paul Durham [Review]

Title: The Luck Uglies
Author: Paul Durham
Publisher: HarperCollins
Release Date: April 29, 2014
ISBN: 0062271504

The Luck Uglies is the first in a tween fantasy-adventure trilogy brimming with legends come to life, a charming wit, and a fantastic cast of characters-and is imbued throughout with the magic of storytelling.

Strange things are happening in Village Drowning, and a terrifying encounter has Rye O'Chanter convinced that the monstrous, supposedly extinct Bog Noblins have returned.
Now Rye's only hope is an exiled secret society so notorious its name can't be spoken aloud: the Luck Uglies. As Rye dives into Village Drowning's maze of secrets, rules, and lies, she'll discover the truth behind the village's legends of outlaws and beasts...and that it may take a villain to save them from the monsters.

The first in a series, The Luck Uglies is an altogether irresistible cross of Lloyd Alexander's Chronicles of Prydain, Stefan Bachmann's The Peculiar, and Chris Healy's The Hero's Guide to Saving Your Kingdom, overflowing with adventure, secrets, friendship, and magic.

This was a great start to what I'm sure will be a fantastic Middle Grade series. The world was interesting, well developed, and I always wanted more back story.

To tell the truth, I really fell in love with this world. I love Drowning and the mystery of the Bog - the other lands that exist somewhere that Rye has only heard about. It's fantastic and I want more RIGHT NOW.

It was really a story of family, Rye and her family live in a run down part of their city - Drowing. Their ruler is egotistical and not at all concerned with what is best for his people, but yet their family "rules" hold them together even when times are difficult.

It was fun, and parts of it were adorable. Lottie, Rye's little sister was one of my favorite characters because of her cute kid sentences. She often came from no where and stole the show with her cuteness.

Rye O'Chanter was a very likeable protagonist, she was adventurous, curious, and she consistently did what was right rather than what was easy which was something I admired about her.

I feel like there are endless places this series can go, it can discuss the issues with the rulers, go to the far off places, learn the ways of The Luck Uglies... really, there are so many things that can potentially happen. The world feels so well rounded that there are so many things I want to see fleshed out more... and we have two more books to do it!

Overall:
I recommend this to any lover of fantasy and adventure. It's fun, full of magical elements, and is a story of family and friendship that will appeal to all ages. Fantasy is my genre of choice, and this book was a great start to what I'm sure will be a beautiful friendship.

Waiting on Wednesday

Waiting on Wednesday is hosted by Breaking the Spine!

Magnolia by Kristi Cook
Release Date: August 5,2014

In Magnolia Branch, Mississippi, the Cafferty and Marsden families are southern royalty. Neighbors since the Civil War, the families have shared vacations, holidays, backyard barbecues, and the overwhelming desire to unite their two clans by marriage. So when a baby boy and girl were born to the families at the same time, the perfect opportunity seemed to have finally arrived.

Jemma Cafferty and Ryder Marsden have no intention of giving in to their parents’ wishes. They’re only seventeen, for goodness’ sake, not to mention that one little problem: They hate each other! Jemma can’t stand Ryder’s nauseating golden-boy persona, and Ryder would like nothing better than to pretend stubborn Jemma doesn’t exist.

But when a violent storm ravages Magnolia Branch, it unearths Jemma’s and Ryder’s true feelings for each other as the two discover that the line between love and hate may be thin enough to risk crossing over.

This book looks so great! I love family histories, and as a proud Southerner I can't wait to read it!

Top Ten Tuesday! Beach Reads Edition

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and The Bookish!

This post is going to be a mixture of books I think you should bring with you to lounge with on the beach and books that I haven't read that I will be bringing.

Not sure if I will make it to the beach this summer - but if I do this is totally what I will be doing.

What you should be taking...

So everyone who knows me knows that I am a hardcore Sarah Dessen fangirl, and this is the best of the best. Macy Queen is looking for perfection, but she finds chaos and discovers that it is even better. Wes is a hottie, and the catering business is fun. If you haven't read this one yet you're completely missing out. It's a fantastic beach read; just embrace it.

This book does not get as much love as it deserves, it is wonderful and different - Two of my favorite things. It involves a hot guy and a summer job dressing in classic colonial America clothes, while dealing with subject such as grief, death, and finding one's self.  It's fantastic.

HOT! HOT! HOT! John After is gorgeous, and this book has you really wanting to meet every police man you see. Such a good story, it deals with some serious stuff, while being absolutely addictive and completely enjoyable. This is a book you get lost in.

What I will be taking...

When a death threat arrives with teen celebrity Vivian Divine's fan mail, Vivian has no choice but to go on the run to Mexico. She soon discovers, though, that her Oscar-nominated performance killing villains on-screen did nothing to prepare her for escaping a madman in real life. Some people say he's a hero, others tremble in his presence, but one thing is clear: he won't stop until Vivian is in his grasp. Why didn't she pay more attention during those judo lessons for her role in Zombie Killer?

Vivian finds an ally in the mysterious and charming Nick. He is everything Hollywood boys are not-genuine, kind, and determined to see Vivian for who she really is. But even he seems like he can't be trusted-what could he be hiding?

Beat up, hungry, and more confused than ever about who she's running from, Vivian is living in a real-life blockbuster horror flick. But there's no option to yell "cut" like there is on set....

Lauren Sabel's Vivian Divine Is Dead is a creepy, witty, fast-paced adventure about family, fame, and having the courage to save yourself.

I started this one and I can tell I am going to be HOOKED.

No matter how many boys Claire kisses, she can’t seem to find a decent boyfriend. Someone who wouldn’t rather date her gorgeous best friend, Megan. Someone who won’t freak out when he learns about the tragedy her family still hasn’t recovered from. Someone whose kisses can carry her away from her backwoods town for one fleeting moment.

Until Claire meets Luke.

But Megan is falling for Luke, too, and if there’s one thing Claire knows for sure, it’s that Megan’s pretty much irresistible.

With true love and best friendship on the line, Claire suddenly has everything to lose. And what she learns—about her crush, her friends, and most of all herself—makes the choices even harder.

In her moving debut, Rachael Allen brilliantly captures the complexities of friendship, the struggles of self-discovery, and the difficulties of trying to find love in high school. Fans of Sarah Ockler, Susane Colasanti, and Stephanie Perkins will fall head over heels for this addictive, heartfelt, and often hilarious modern love story.

Lucy’s learned some important lessons from tabloid darling Jayla Heart’s all-too-public blunders: Avoid the spotlight, don’t feed the Internet trolls, and keep your secrets secret. The policy has served Lucy well all through high school, so when her best friend Ellie gets sick before prom and begs her to step in as Cole’s date, she accepts with a smile, silencing about ten different reservations. Like the one where she’d rather stay home shredding online zombies. And the one where she hates playing dress-up. And especially the one where she’s been secretly in love with Cole since the dawn of time.

When Cole surprises her at the after party with a kiss under the stars, it’s everything Lucy has ever dreamed of… and the biggest BFF deal-breaker ever. Despite Cole’s lingering sweetness, Lucy knows they’ll have to ’fess up to Ellie. But before they get the chance, Lucy’s own Facebook profile mysteriously explodes with compromising pics of her and Cole, along with tons of other students’ party indiscretions. Tagged. Liked. And furiously viral.

By Monday morning, Lucy’s been branded a slut, a backstabber, and a narc, mired in a tabloid-worthy scandal just weeks before graduation.

Lucy’s been battling undead masses online long enough to know there’s only one way to survive a disaster of this magnitude: Stand up and fight. Game plan? Uncover and expose the Facebook hacker, win back her best friend’s trust, and graduate with a clean slate.

There’s just one snag—Cole. Turns out Lucy’s not the only one who’s been harboring unrequited love...

Bettina Vasilis can hardly believe it when basketball star Brady Cullen asks her out, and she just about faints when her strict father actually approves of him.

But when school starts up again, Brady changes. What happened to the sweet boy she fell in love with? Then she meets a smoldering guy in his twenties, and this “cowboy” is everything Brady is not—gentle, caring, and interested in getting to know the real Bettina.

Bettina knows that breaking up with Brady would mean giving up her freedom—and that it would be inappropriate for anything to happen between her and Cowboy. Still, she can’t help that she longs for the scent of his auto shop whenever she’s anywhere else.

When tragedy strikes, Bettina must tell her family the truth—and kiss goodbye the things she thought she knew about herself and the men in her life.

Leslie Connor has written a lyrical, heartbreaking, and ultimately hopeful story about family, romance, and the immense power of love.

What are you guys taking with you to the beach?

All Lined Up by Cora Carmack [Review]

 Title: All Lined Up
Author: Cora Carmack
Publisher: William Morrow Paperbacks
ISBN:  0062326201
Release Date: May 13, 2014

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Cora Carmack follows up her trio of hits—Losing It, Faking It, and Finding It—with this thrilling first novel in an explosive series bursting with the Texas flavor, edge, and steamy romance of Friday Night Lights.

In Texas, two things are cherished above all else—football and gossip. My life has always been ruled by both.

Dallas Cole loathes football. That's what happens when you spend your whole childhood coming in second to a sport. College is her time to step out of the bleachers, and put the playing field (and the players) in her past.

But life doesn't always go as planned. As if going to the same college as her football star ex wasn’t bad enough, her father, a Texas high school coaching phenom, has decided to make the jump to college ball… as the new head coach at Rusk University. Dallas finds herself in the shadows of her father and football all over again.

Carson McClain is determined to go from second-string quarterback to the starting line-up. He needs the scholarship and the future that football provides. But when a beautiful redhead literally falls into his life, his focus is more than tested. It's obliterated.

Dallas doesn't know Carson is on the team. Carson doesn't know that Dallas is his new coach's daughter.

And neither of them know how to walk away from the attraction they feel.

This title intrigued me because of the football aspect. I'll go ahead and say it - as a girl from the South football is a way of life, a religion, whatever you want to call it - but it is important.  Very important.

That is something that I loved about this book because it captured it very well.

Dallas (named after the Dallas Cowboys) has grown up around football, her father being the coach of numerous teams throughout her life. He seems to have a system, he works a team up, makes them good again, and then they move on somewhere else.

She thinks she is finally going to have a chance to be in a school and a place without her father... until he comes to her college as the head football coach.

Carson needs a scholarship and he is willing to do just about anything to make sure he gets one.

These two meet and... SPARKS. Major sparks.

I loved Dallas and Carson together and every scene made me giddy. This was the first New Adult book that I've had the pleasure to read, but I found it to hold the appeal of YA with more edgier subject matter (language, more graphic sexy time scenes, etc). They took things slow but even their friendship held major tension and I often found myself on the edge of my seat waiting for their relationship to take off.

They both have things going on that are more important than a romantic relationship and I am so glad that was a point. So often in romances I see: girl meets boy + boy sweeps girl off her fee = nothing else matters.

While this may make for a good love story - it isn't reality, but ALL LINED UP does bring attention to "the real world" and real world responsibilities that have to be acknowledged.

Carson needs every spare moment he has to ensure his future. That's a huge deal, and it isn't ignored and I loved that.

Dallas spends a lot of time overcoming her past and realizing who she is during this book.

One of the most important aspect of this book was the amount of respect that is given to various characters. Dallas and Carson are not stupid teenagers, or silly college kids. They are people with real issues who give great thought and real respect to various people in their life over what they want.

It felt extremely real.

Overall: If you want to read a realistic (and smexy) love story about two people who are intelligent and very well rounded - this is for you. It comes highly recommended.

Squeal-worthy June Releases!

This upcoming month is full of wonderful YA releases, here are a few I think you should be particularly excited for.

Let me know what you think, and if there are any I should add to the list of AWESOME!

Title:  Say What You Will
Author:  Cammie McGovern
Release Date: June 3rd
Publisher: HarperTeen

John Green's The Fault in Our Stars meets Rainbow Rowell's Eleanor & Park in this beautifully written, incredibly honest, and emotionally poignant novel. Cammie McGovern's insightful young adult debut is a heartfelt and heartbreaking story about how we can all feel lost until we find someone who loves us because of our faults, not in spite of them.

Born with cerebral palsy, Amy can't walk without a walker, talk without a voice box, or even fully control her facial expressions. Plagued by obsessive-compulsive disorder, Matthew is consumed with repeated thoughts, neurotic rituals, and crippling fear. Both in desperate need of someone to help them reach out to the world, Amy and Matthew are more alike than either ever realized.

When Amy decides to hire student aides to help her in her senior year at Coral Hills High School, these two teens are thrust into each other's lives. As they begin to spend time with each other, what started as a blossoming friendship eventually grows into something neither expected.
I have already posted my review for this one here, but I cannot express enough how much I fell in love with it. It's a different type of diverse YA, one that we don't see often and I highly recommend checking it out.

Title: The Murder Complex
Author: Lindsay Cummings
Publisher: Greenwillow Books
Release Date: June 10th
Goodreads

An action-packed, blood-soaked, futuristic debut thriller set in a world where the murder rate is higher than the birthrate. For fans of Moira Young’s Dust Lands series, La Femme Nikita, and the movie Hanna.

Meadow Woodson, a fifteen-year-old girl who has been trained by her father to fight, to kill, and to survive in any situation, lives with her family on a houseboat in Florida. The state is controlled by The Murder Complex, an organization that tracks the population with precision.

The plot starts to thicken when Meadow meets Zephyr James, who is—although he doesn’t know it—one of the MC’s programmed assassins. Is their meeting a coincidence? Destiny? Or part of a terrifying strategy? And will Zephyr keep Meadow from discovering the haunting truth about her family?

Action-packed, blood-soaked, and chilling, this is a dark and compelling debut novel by Lindsay Cummings.

I've heard so many wonderful things about this title! I can't wait!

Title: Brazen
Author: Latherine Longshore
Publisher: Viking Juvenille

Mary Howard has always lived in the shadow of her powerful family. But when she’s married off to Henry Fitzroy, King Henry VIII’s illegitimate son, she rockets into the Tudor court’s inner circle. Mary and “Fitz” join a tight clique of rebels who test the boundaries of court’s strict rules with their games, dares, and flirtations. The more Mary gets to know Fitz, the harder she falls for him, but is forbidden from seeing him alone. The rules of court were made to be pushed…but pushing them too far means certain death. Is true love worth dying for?

I think I'm a historical fiction junkie. I love the sound of this title SO MUCH! Anything involving the Tudors and you can count me in!

Title: Bad Luck Girl
Author: Sarah Zettel
Publisher: Random House Books for Young Readers
Series: The American Fairy Trilogy #3
ISBN: 0375869409

Fans of Libba Bray's The Diviners will love the blend of fantasy and jazz-hot Chicago in this stylish series.

After rescuing her parents from the Seelie king at Hearst Castle, Callie is caught up in the war between the fairies of the Midnight Throne and the Sunlit Kingdoms. By accident, she discovers that fairies aren't the only magical creatures in the world. There's also Halfers, misfits that are half fairy and half other--laced with strange magic and big-city attitude. As the war heats up, Callie's world falls apart. And even though she's the child of prophecy, she doubts she can save the Halfers, her people, her family, and Jack, let alone herself. The fairies all say Callie is the Bad Luck Girl, and she's starting to believe them.

A strong example of diversity in YA, the American Fairy Trilogy introduces Callie LeRoux, a half-black teen who stars in this evocative story full of American history and fairy tales.

This book is another great example of diversity in YA - and I am super happy to be a part of the blog tour and to announce a giveaway for BAD LUCK GIRL!
